Day 1: MARRAKECH – AIT BENHADDOU – VALLEY OF ROSES – DADES GORGE
You will be collected from your Riad or the airport; we will travel in the direction of Ouarzazate by crossing the High Atlas over the incredible pass of Tizi n’Tichka at 2260 meters of altitude. This a great mountain range filled with extraordinary landscapes that we cross admiring the Berber territory with typical small villages, strongholds etc. We will arrive at Ait Benhaddou; the best preserved Ksar and one which enjoys the status of World Heritage site declared by UNESCO, its highly ornate adobe houses are encompassed within a strong defensive wall and reinforced by turrets, this spectacular kasbah, built with mud and stones is miraculously kept standing. At the time that it was inhabited, high on a hill and surrounded by the desert landscape of the Anti Atlas, it was without any doubt one of the most magical places of Morocco.
We will continue our route along the Route of the Thousand Kasbahs, a route deep in history where we will rejoice in the real life of the Berber peoples of the Atlas, where villages are confused with the landscape, where the streets are not paved, where there are no cars, but donkeys carrying loads and where only the window frames of the houses are highlighted as they are painted in white on the mud and houses are camouflaged in an arid environment without vegetation. We will make a stop in Skoura to visit the Kasbah of Amridil, here our route will continue toward Kelaat M’gouna (capital of the Valley of roses) and well known for the massive cultivation of roses. There we will discover an impressive landscape, with harmonious colours and nature in all its glory making this valley a landscape worth admiring. Finally we take a track of about 20 km visiting the Berber nomads living in caves and arriving at the Dades Gorge where we spend the night.
Day 2: DADES GORGE- TODRA GORGE – MERZOUGA
After a good Moroccan breakfast we travel to the Dades Valley, passing by the famous Gorge, we will arrive at the Parador Hotel where we can admire the spectacular views that this valley offers us. We will continue toward the impressive Todra Gorge which is more than 100 meters high, with its houses excavated in the rock, it is a magical place of vertical rocky walls caused by the erosion of the water and the air over many centuries; a perfect place for climbers. Surrounded by a low flowing river of crystalline water we can enjoy this stop until lunchtime.
We will continue through the Palm Grove of Jorf; a small village anchored in time, we then continue toward Erfoud with an important archaeological site which is located on the edge of the Sahara desert where we will visit the workshops of marble and fossils.
We will continue until our arrival in Merzouga where we will leave the 4×4 to travel on foot into the Sahara desert with camels, where we will spend the night at a Berber camp in traditional Haima tents and enjoy a dinner under the blanket of stars listening to the sound of the drums around the fire.
Day 3: MERZOUGA – RISSANI – TAZARINE – DRAA VALLEY – AGDEZ – OUARZAZATE
One of the experiences that must not be missed in the desert is seeing the dawn; impressive landscapes of dunes that happen before our eyes and that are changing as the sun rises over the horizon.
After seeing the sunrise we will be back with our camels to the Riad where we can take a shower and enjoy an authentic Moroccan breakfast.
We will continue our route toward Ouarzazate passing through the Palm Grove of Tafilalet; the largest palm grove in the world, with about 800,000 date palms it is a landscape worthy of admiration. Rissani is very famous for its market, this city exhibits itself with dignity and pride and it was the last commercial stage before the desert in the days of the trading caravans. There is a unique atmosphere to soak in as we stroll through the souks of Rissani, not found anywhere else in Morocco, at twilight the city roofs filter the last rays of the sun in an explosion of colours that overtake the senses, rivalling even the by now well-known aroma of the rich combination of spices in the souk.
Our journey continues in the direction of Alnif where you will find tremendous desert landscapes of black and brown stone, and where on the small rivers or streams are tremendous oasis filled with orchards and of life. We will take the road that crosses the small mountain range of the Anti-Atlas, which has been gaining popularity as it offers some fantastic places full of peace and tranquility; the pink colour of the rocks is complemented with beautiful crystalline waters that run through the river. We will continue our route toward the oasis of Tazarine and Nkob until we reach the Draa Valley; one of the most exotic destinations of Southern Morocco and the largest in the country. There the culture, architecture and way of life are completely different to Europe, is a great source of surprises; the kasbahs, the castles of clay and the ksour are the most attractive since they emerge from the same arid land, these buildings that happen along the valley soften the landscape with its beautiful constructions. In the afternoon we arrive in Ouarzazate where we spend the night.
